A group of lost skiers on Sunpeaks Ski Hill (B.C.) was rescued with the help of 18 volunteer searchers and a "drone rescue team". Hopefully this will get equal airtime from the media.

The Op got the context of the story wrong.
It was a professional rescue team that was equipped with Infrared camera carrying drones.
This was not a group of hobbyist saving the day with off the shelf drones.

Not hobbyists maybe, but it looks like it very much like it was an off-the-shelf drone. Judging by their facebook page it was probably an Inspire with the optional (and pricey) FLIR camera.

I found a better article that reveals it wasn't their Inspire, it was their DJI Matrice.
