How do I bring Mavic home when tablet/phone disconnects without using RTH?

I made the jump to the IPhone and now everything runs smooth

I have a strong urge to smash an iOS device against a nearest wall after about 30 minutes of general use. Too many things you just can't normally do, just because Apple gods told you so.

How is the "flight distance" actually determined? Is it GPS dependent? Does the drone calculate it against the last know home point? Difference between the GPS location of the RC and the Drone? The manual is does not go into details..

All of that could have an effect on the "reduce the distance" approach to bringing it back... just curious, the two times I my phone froze I used RTH and it worked perfectly but the drone still had full GPS signal..
