Mavic Pro has knocked my confidence

Flying over water isnt a problem UNTIL its a problem. Its always a risk.

If it falls in the water its dead, if it falls onto concrete its dead. If it falls into a forest its probably stuck in a tree and unrecoverable.

Flying it anywhere is a risk.

Right, but most of the time over water you cant recover and repair the drone.

never had an issue.....Ok one time (kinda) but just once I swear.....cR

That's why I fly at 3000 to 4300m (my highest till now) hight over open water: I fear the suction effect...

I have to say this ..when you fly your batts down below 20% time after time it really does destroy them!!!Take care of YOUR BATTS...they keep your bird in the air..
