Riddle me this... Picture yourself on the side of a hill where you plan to launch your Mavic.

When you set the RTH height, is the height setting based on the point of origin where you are launching or will the RTH height of the drone adjust to the ground level where it is actually flying?

If the Mavic is flying on either the higher or lower ground from the takeoff origin, will the RTH height be 30m + or - the difference between the takeoff origin and where it is flying at the time RTH is activated?

When it indicates Home Point has been recorded that is the height that is captured and used for height determination The Mavic will actually indicate negative height if flow down from that height into a valley for instance.

The takeoff point is always at 0 feet. The RTH altitude is the height above that point.

When RTH is initiated, the Mavic will fly up to 0 feet if the altitude is a negative value in DJI GO (meaning you flew below the takeoff point). At that point, it'll then fly up to the RTH altitude. If the Mavic is already above the RTH altitude when RTH is initiated, it'll immediately start flying back to the home point at the current altitude.

Check out the Mavic manual for more details on how RTH works.

The Mavic has NO IDEA where the ground is. The downward sonar can detect objects below the drone (such as your hand or a guardrail or a tree branch). The downward vision systems can detect shapes below the drone to help align the aircraft similar to its take-off orientation for a precision landing. But there is nothing in the Mavic that knows whether you are flying too high or too low relative to the ground. It only knows the altitude where you took off.
