Does the drone need to be airborne for subject scanning? No matter what mode I select Normal mode or single shot the subject scanning button will not switch on.

Yes, but also the drone needs to be in 30FPS mode, it won't work on high frame rates.
You can also manually select the subject to active track it, you don't need to turn on subject scanning if you want.
