Currently the drone code applies, however in November for drones under 250 grams, you will be able to fly within residential areas etc. Currently that is illegal.

Mavic mini and the new drone rules - UK

On reflection, the new freedom to fly might well be short lived. A requirement for remote identification has been added also: " While the sections of the DR relating to Class C1, C2 and C3 unmanned aircraft already describes requirements for these types to be fitted with a ‘direct remote...

Think carefully before purchasing if you’re in the EU and UK

After November 1st, the MM will become legacy subcategory A1 indefinitely, without the need to undertake any formal qualifications! In addition, currently rule-breaking flights (especially those conducted with a Mavic Mini) may well become legitimate following the 1st November so long as they...

@scro Agreed, which is most likely why the latest changes have been made.

Mavic mini and the new drone rules - UK

To be honest, when I originally saw this video, I did think it was clutching at straws that MTOM would ever apply to legacy craft, as this is a legal definition under the new regulations that must be provided by the manufacturer, i.e. DJI, for each aircraft. This is something they have never...

It's certainly good news for any UK Mavic Mini owners. In theory you will be able to undertake flights directly from back (or front) gardens without impunity!

That is correct, and when flown in this configuration will be limited to subcategory A3. As long as a Mavic Mini weighs less than 250 grams at the time of flight, it will be able to be flown in the A1 subcategory indefinitely. Source: CAP1789: The EU UAS Regulation Package – Outline

Mavic mini and the new drone rules - UK

There will be no limit on flying within what are currently defined as "congested areas" as of November. The current drone code will be superceded and the ANO will also be updated to reflect the new regulations.

See below extract from page 8: "Interpretation of ‘Maximum Take-off Mass’ within the Open category While the EU UAS Regulations make reference to ‘maximum take-off mass’ (MTOM) throughout, as defined in Article 2 of the IR, this term creates some confusion when referring to ‘home built’ or...

Mavic mini and the new drone rules - UK

From reading CAP1789, it looks like the only subcategory with any limitations at all with regards to flying in built up/congested areas will be A3: "A3 (Fly ‘far from’ people) – This category covers the more general types of unmanned aircraft operations. The intent is that the unmanned...
