Polarised filtering works best when the surface that is doing the reflecting is at a 45° angle to the viewer. So it wouldn’t work optimally if you are looking straight at the screen.
I’d be checking out the socket you’re plugging the usb into, especially if it’s a lightning equiped iPhone. Fluff gets compacted in there preventing the plug from seating properly. I’ve even seen the very end of cheap lightning plugs break off...
