GPS does not depend upon light to function, so the drone will fly back, but it cannot see to avoid obstacles, so set your RTH altitude higher than any possible obstructions, and take over the landing manually for the final approach. -
That you couldn't fly at all is strange... usually you will only be limited in height & distance. Below writing in the user manual exist for most DJI models... Did you check in the profile section in the app if you were logged in or not ?

It may be a grey zone but Aviation Authority (TC / FAA) rules don't apply indoors.
