You will probably find it easier with the mavic pro to learn on, obstacle avoidance plus it lands pretty much where you take off from...ive got both and from my experience the mavic is far more forgiving and worth the extra investment considering how compact it is to travel with...you would not...
The iOS lead is for iPhone, in order to use a mini iPad you use the usb connection at the base of the controller and a standard lead not the short one supplied....hope this helps

Allowing only a 90m height and 75m minimum over buildings or roads ECT gives just a narrow window 15m to fly within, this allows more confusion for the uav pilot and potentially more hazardous towards what the FAA are trying to protect....this does not make sense
The app and remote functions work in harmony to allow the mavic to function, there's been reports of cable errors causing all sorts of issues. however I would still suggest flying to close to an airport with radar interference is the probable cause....pilot error
Always set a one of the c buttons to home lock, that way when you get into a uncertain situation, you have a fail safe with out confusion and more chance of recovery with less battery drain...
It's possible there's a problem with the link cable from the handset to the phone, it's also possible that moisture may have been the cause with the link cable...ive had similar with my s7 edge which detected moisture in the micro usb when I plugged in new cable.
Bit of a mystery, I did notice there was a warning about flying in a restricted area, its possible radar interference from a nearby airport. I'm just guessing but some research along those lines may help solve the mystery, I will do some research to try to help out... Sorry to here you lost the...
