The device you are using to fly the mavic has to have cellular ability in order to work as home point. Simply having an internet connection is not enough.
Full down elevator when combined with full throttle down will not slow the forward momentum of the drone. If you had only applied full elevator down and left throttle at center or even increased it, you probably would have stopped the drone from crashing.

I would not use the mavic to carry any loads by the way. And there's a strong chance that if you land you'll lose signal to the Mavic, in which case it will just sit there and not takeoff or RTH.
If the battery is over six months old you're out of warranty. This happened to a battery on my inspire 2. Only 6 cycles ever, but beyond 6 months so had to buy a new one. It was uneven cells. Basically at full charge some cells were more than .1 volt difference. 4.2 vs 4.1 etc. So it marks bad...

The battery already seemed very low. 55% was not even close, it was more like 5-10% really. Under load you were dropping below 3.3v per cell.
