Most of Boston is within 5 miles of Logan airport so you would need to contact ATC for recreational flying. It is also very crowded down there so the whole not flying over people thing is really tough. Also there are TFRs whenever there is an event at Fenway.

As a RECREATIONAL pilot, you do not concern yourself with air space classification. You must notify all airports within 5 statue miles.
As a COMMERCIAL, Part 107, pilot, you only concern yourself with airspace classification. You must receive permission to fly in class B, C, D and E airspace...
The simple reason of being a safer pilot suffices in my mind. The single most beneficial reason for me is the ability to fly in class G airspace (non-towered airport) without notifying ATC or the Airport.

I just got off the phone with the Hansom Air Field management office. It seems for recreational flight they will need to give authorizations not just receiving the notification. They said to just leave a message but to do it prior to your flight to give them time to...

I work in Waltham and have had some luck at Gore Place. I don't think you are required to inform heliports like hospitals and new stations, just airports.
Because Newton is full of uppity yuppies that are more concerned about their illusion of privacy. I am in the process of registering there since I don't see any way around it and I want to fly in Newton.
