I notice the same thing.. I plugged mine in on Tuesday night and put it away when it hit 100%. Thursday afternoon I powered it on and it was down to 82%.

Is there any benefit to using a device that has wifi/cellular? I was thinking of using an old phone I have as well - if I'm in the yard it'll have wifi but if i go elsewhere it wouldn't. Am I losing any functionality/safety by going that route?

Its not free, its just easier to sign up. After the 48 hour window in order to enroll you have to send pics/videos of the device to show that it isn't already damaged. I guess that would keep people from using it for a few weeks, then crashing and signing up for it.
