Do the shoot before it's completely dark so there's still some ambient light to illuminate the surroundings.

it's no wonder you don't see the surrounding landscape at those settings. Whatever your frame rate is, double it at least. Maybe instead of shooting at full dark, shoot at blue hour so there's some ambient light left to help light other things...
