I've had to hand catch my Mavic a couple of times now. Once on a small speed boat and another on a small, yet busy, wooden dock over a lake. To prevent the Mavic from fighting you when a hand gets underneath it, turn off the "Downward Vision" sensor: Visual Navigation Settings > Advance Settings...

It should work. I bought my Mavis from Los Angeles, California. Brought it to two smaller islands in the Philippines, Coron - Palawan and Boracay. Follow me worked fine. GPS picked up ok. My iPhone 6 was in airplane mode.
