Time of day changes in airspace - how do you handle them?

I live in the USA near an airport in what is Class D airspace certain hours of the day, and class G at all other times. The LAANC apps and DJI zones aren't smart enough to recognize this time-of-day variation and consider the airspace class D with zero AGL (no fly zone) at all times. I've...

    Changing max hight altitude

The US limit is 400 AGL, but that doesn’t necessarily mean 400’ above takeoff point. The rule is 400 ‘ above nearby natural or man made obstacles; for example taking off from a canyon floor 1000’ below the top of steep canyon wall means you could legally fly to 1400’ above takeoff altitude.

    Mavic Pro dual controllers query

It’s possible the controllers will remember the link configuration even after powered down. I haven’t tried this, but if so you may be able to power up and do the link in advance of the mission (at base), then power down until ready to begin. then turn on controllers when ready to fly. Would...

Would you buy a M2P now with remote id on distant horizon?

There will be add on modules to retrofit older drones without built in hardware for remote ID. It’s still many months away. If you need a drone to fly I wouldn’t hesitate to get an M2P. The refurbished route is a great suggestion.

    Mavic Pro dual controllers query

I have tested this on my M2P with the original controller and a smart controller. After correctly pairing the SC as the primary and the original controller as the secondary. Here's the test: I shut down the SC and the secondary controller retained control and automatically became "primary" When...

    I had my first crash

I made the same mistake once - selecting land vs RTH. Now I use a Smart Controller instead of a phone which has a much larger screen and a dedicated hardware RTH button. It’s an expensive tool but I think it’s worth the investment as it will work with multiple aircraft

Mavic 2 Pro Hyperlapse Lighting "jumps"

I just came across this while searching for another topic. I have a Mavic 2 Pro and have shot a few hyperlapse videos in changing light conditions. I see this kind of exposure adjustments happening even when the camera is in manual settings. I've found results will be much better by shooting in...

    Flying over water with VPS...

I have flown multiple times over water up to well over 10K feet without any loss of signal or erratic behavior. Longest flight was 33k feet over water and swamp. All at 20 to 30 feet AGL. The M2P will fly over water up to and beyond VLOS limits. Go find a flight crew member (or two) to serve as...

Estimating height if trees, utility line. Buildings. Hills and other natural features both nearby and distant.

I fly with 3 batteries. If I’m in a new location my first flight is to ascertain the height of the tallest obstacle and confirm the camera set up / filter , etc Up and down in 3 minutes and only uses a few percent on one battery. Then as others have said I add some safety margin, 20 or 30 feet.

    Most of Louisiana Restricted??

This zone appears to be only of DJI's making, at least at this point. Unfortunately you will have to go through the self-unlock process to fly anywhere in LA or about 4,600 square miles (12,000 square km)

    Most of Louisiana Restricted??

Yep - Hurricane Laura impact. The center is a few miles from Ft Polk. POTUS was there this week visiting the hardest hit areas. I'm not sure but I suspect Air Force 1 flew in and out of Ft Polk, then he traveled around the area by helo. I heard that commercial drone ops (for storm damage...
