With a Cat1 or Cat2 you could certainly do as the OP did (keeping within VLOS), Cat3 can't, non categorized can't .... if you want to be legal !

And only with a cat1,2 or 3 drone I believe.

Totally illegal here in the US, otherwise I'd carry my drone with me in my truck and put it up every time I get stuck on the i95 !! (East coasters will know exactly what I'm talking about!)

As has been said above, the onus is on you to look and listen and yield to manned aircraft. As far as I'm aware, fixed wing aircraft must stay above 500ft unless on final for landing or checking out a landing field. Are you on the approach to an airfield? If it's an small airfield it won't...

NTSB flew a recon drone over it earlier. First thing I thought of was, what a terrible drone operator! This tragedy is going to affect thousands of people and commerce for years to come. It was hard watching the construction crew go down. Very sad.

I'm guessing that to go in any further you'd have to turn off anti-collision? That would be a no for me in a place I couldn't retrieve it from! Tempting though, I love old industrial buildings like that!

I'd have the controller with me and my tractor is open station so I'd be able to see the drone at any time so I'd still be within regulation.
