How do you reset a stick? What is meant by this?

It seems to respond to me telling it to go up or down intermitently...again, mostly just after I have taken off this works fine, and then after flying for a bit and going into just hover, only way it goes down, is if hold down, and then it starts to go into land mode...very frustrating. Any ide...
