Flying sport mode for distance
It all depends on wind resistance also. If flying against the wind the it will take longer to get to where your going and batteries will drain faster as apposed to flying with the wind regardless of sport mode. -

What device (iPad/Samsung/Crystalsky?) Would you recommend?
I have been using my samsung 8 plus and haven't had any issues. I'm upgrading my phone to the note 8. Hopefully no issues with that phone also. -

DJI to restrict non-compliant drones at next software update
No it's about purchasing something because of all the things that it or you can do with it and then taking away half of the those things you originally purchased it for.
