Not quite. You also need to be holding the control stick down to trigger an auto-landing. But even then, that can be aborted and the auto landing immediately cancelled if you just push the control stick back up.

The tensions are about a completely imaginary security issue.
It's very hard to get past that, particularly when no-one actually investigates into the (imaginary) issue.
The drone comes from the factory with a properly calibrated IMU and compass and they don't go out of calibration unless involved in a big crash or you add or remove parts to/from the drone.

It's not normal to have to recalibrate the compass or IMU.
If there was a problem with those, he would have already noticed that and the app would have advised that recalibration was necessary.
