A NOTAM (notice to airmen) is checked prior to flights and are specific to a route. For instance if you were flying (light aircraft or similar) you would check for for any notices Enroute between your start airfield using the airfield designator codes E.g. EGNR (Hawarden) to EGCV (Sleap)...
