    RANT against cruise ships

My wife and I went on Carnival over Thanksgiving. Had a look for their policy- seems to be that they collect it at check-in, but you can get it back when you're going ashore for port calls. You're just not allowed to have it underway.

3 Don't try this at home- Fire in my valley

I'm looking for the reference, but there is a reasonable consensus that the introduction of European diseases and the subsequent reduction in indigenous population gave a century or so of re-wilding. Most of the heavy European expansion in North America didn't happen until the mid-late 17th...

    DroneBeacon db120 (for remote ID)

25 grams can mean different things to different drones. For my Mini 2 that gets used for commercial stuff? That's 10% extra weight. For my Evo II Pro? That's... uhhh... that's a rounding error. It's probably the difference between the standard props and the low-noise props.

3 Don't try this at home- Fire in my valley

Yup. I know that feel- most years, I burn 8 months worth of hepa filters in a single fire season in central California.

3 Don't try this at home- Fire in my valley

It's hard to believe, but between forest management and near-instant firefighting work, there's more square miles of forest in North America today than in 1492.

    Cool little helicopter

I've got an old TREX kit kicking around somewhere... was thinking the other day about how that might be fun to build with modern electronics and GPS, put in a camera and laser rangefinder, maybe even a mini LIDAR scanner...

    RPIC Duties

1- If Person 1 is the RPIC but someone else is flying, then they have to be able to directly supervise the person who is flying, and if they're inside the vehicle and out of sight of what's going on, they have no ability to see something going wrong and intervene in a timely fashion to prevent a...

Would you buy a 3D FPV VR/AR DJI Drone App for Oculus Quest 1 / 2 / Pro?

Tbh I've never done anything where I need that level of precision- 99% of my flight time is just doing pre-programmed grids over something for mapping.

Would you buy a 3D FPV VR/AR DJI Drone App for Oculus Quest 1 / 2 / Pro?

Why would it be harder to use the sticks on the Oculus controllers than the sticks on the DJI controller?

Would you buy a 3D FPV VR/AR DJI Drone App for Oculus Quest 1 / 2 / Pro?

I would be interested... but very, very cautious. The sensors on the quest are not for use in sunlight...

Mapping recommendations: Web ODM vs Maps made easy

Also, yes- Agisoft is the best, hands down. There isn't anything out there at the moment that can do the job as well as they do. Here's a sample of a roof inspection I did a while back. About 5500 pictures taken from ~30 feet above the roof, and in the end I was left with a 32 GB geolocated...

Mapping recommendations: Web ODM vs Maps made easy

WebODM on any system* runs inside of a VM through Docker. PC, Linux, Mac, whatever. The paid installer for Mac just makes the setup process easy. *except for PC with a paid installer, then it runs native.

Mapping recommendations: Web ODM vs Maps made easy

You're going to want more resources than that, I suspect... I usually give it 6 of 8 cores and 24 of 32 GB RAM, when I'm running the docker version on Mac. I user both Mac and PC, depending on what I'm doing or what day it is or whatever I feel like using that day. Did you actually get the...

You're trying to do the manual install, it looks like. But you paid for the pre-made installer?
