This is incorrect. DJI updated the RM500 to use Fly as well as Go4. I am currently flying Mini 2 and Air 2s on the original Smart Controller RM500, works great!

It’s absolutely true that external storage (and lots of it) is needed for video work. Get at least a 2TB “laptop” drive, meaning it is bus powered. It gets its power from the USB connection on your mac.

This issue doesn’t affect the Mavic 2 Pro and other drones which run on DJI Go4. Refer to post #5 in this thread on the DJI forums: https://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=redirect&goto=findpost&ptid=285890&pid=3026660 It can be a nightmare on drones running on DJI Fly.
