Washington State Parks Drone Application - Cape Disappointment

There are hundreds of miles of coastline along Washington and Oregon to fly your drone that would be easier to access. This park is specifically harder because it’s more isolated in a natural bowl or cove I guess is how I’d say it. I think the Oregon coastlines are easier and more expansive...

Washington State Parks Drone Application - Cape Disappointment

Yeah it's really up to the individual ranger. Problem is that you can get a nice one that recognizes you're not a problem- but the next one will be the opposite. Depends on behavior(s) of the pilot they've experienced in the past.

No Drones Allowed in National Parks

Good point and question. My understanding is that the local ranger, if asked would refer the drone operator to "regional administrator's office". That, of course, is the giant bureaucratic red tape hell (for a national park anyway). Here's a list of State "impact studies" they do before...

No Drones Allowed in National Parks

To help answer your question..... I completed an application using the same process as a commercial photographer/videographer would have used for drones in Washington State Parks. The respective city authorities LOVE film-makers. So you'd have a lot more pull notifying them first. If you are...

    Night Flying

That is not true in all cases: 1. IF you are flying under Part 107 - YES you need a waiver to fly at night commercially. Request a Waiver/Airspace Authorization – Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) 2. IF you are flying recreationally under community-based guidelines (AMA code... "8. RC night...

No Drones Allowed in National Parks

I don't think it's "a" drone the parks are concerned about. It's their paranoid view of the future .... LOTs of drones. As the prices come down, more people own, more drones buzzing around. If you've ever been to Yellowstone, imagine all those selfie sticks being replaced with drones. I...

Drone takes out cyclist during California race.

Yeah, there is a lot more risk when you fly "near" any crowd. I think the big Fubar the pilot made was trying to fly near so many tall trees - following a fast moving target. It looked like he clipped a tree, then there was no hope in control. I was playing around last week in a rural area...

    Portland area pilots

PDX guy here (live in Vancouver). Enjoying the Mavic a lot. Kind of bummed learning about the "special surface class E" airspace that goes all the way from the PDX class C edge near the old Evergreen airport clear up to Yacolt!! No problem for a hobby flight. But wreaks havoc for Part 107 ops...

    DENIED!

From a fixed wing pilot perspective, I noticed that even though outside the 5 miles - that park is in line with the approach of the runways. However, my guess is that it's the specific airport & county authorities who have taken it upon themselves to restrict drones in whatever matter they...

Washington State Parks Drone Application - Cape Disappointment

I thought about that. But the topography and weather just doesn't allow you access. If you google earth it - you can see how isolated it is. Also, state parks don't have the same rules as national parks. They don't specifically say land & takeoff. They can interpret an overflight as possibly...

Washington State Parks Drone Application - Cape Disappointment

I don't "like" the rules either. The rules are there because people who don't fly drones don't really understand them. It's a bit of a witch hunt mentality in some locations. I didn't find that to be the case at Cape D. They were very friendly and treated me just like any other user (aside...

Washington State Parks Drone Application - Cape Disappointment

Returned home today from Cape Disappointment. Had 2 beautiful days and 2 very wet days. Overall, the process with the Park Rangers was easy & went well. I checked in on Sunday, they handed me the completed and approved application. Later that day, I went to the office and told them I'd like...
