What if I'm in the middle of nowhere 50 miles from any Wi-Fi or cell service? Am I screwed?

I was unable to fly the drone tonight beyond a 100 feet or so because of the "not logged in" message. What's the fix? BTW, I don't use my personal cell phone for the drone, I'm using an older Samsung S7 with no sim card so I have wifi if I'm in range but can't connect to a cellular network...

I also fly hot air balloons and one of the ways we know we are above an obstacle is to look out at the horizon. If the object is higher than the horizon that you aren't going to clear it. This works well for tall objects in the distance, not for actually measuring the height of said object.
