43 CFR 423.41 - Aircraft.
g) You must not operate model aircraft except as allowed in special use areas established by an authorized official under subpart E of this part 423.
Came across this regulation on a sign near a dam earlier this year. Wondering just what the boundary for restriction of operation entails, given the rules around national parks (no takeoff, landing or control point within the park, but overflying is ok). Is the sign acting like the boundary? If I take off from down the road a few feet can they really stop me? Who is an "authorized official" (and what's a fair bribe to get permission)?
Not really wanting to be a test case, but I might be willing to see if there's any interest in getting clarification. In this particular case there was too large of a crowd nearby for safe flight but there's always another day.
