Well, wouldn't you know - with the beginning of cooler/rainy weather, our heater decided it wasn't going to work. Called the repair technician out. They found that some of the parts were going to be quite expensive to replace. Given it was a 21-year-old system, we figured replacing parts were going to be a costly band-aid. How soon would we be repairing it again? So, we decided to have it replaced. I figured it was a good time to send my Mini 2 aloft! Ended up with long clips. This is compilation of those. It's not cinematic or stunning - Just thought I'd share.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I must say that I had never seen a unit mounted on the roof before. Here in the south, they are all placed on a concrete slab on the ground.

@GFields - most of the new construction here in CA has them on a pad like you described, but our house was built in 1977. We've lived here since 1997. It must have been the way they did things then.

Wow! I'd no idea homes ever had an HVAC compressor unit mounted on the roof. We never had one in the UK but both homes we built in 1997 and 2018 in the US have HVAC compressors on concrete pads as others have stated. That reminds me, I need to cover both units with convers for the winter; I'm late doing it this year.

I think most are put on pads now. Our house was built-in 1977.

Hi I am new here and my name is Ryan beginner drone pilot.

I just joined this morning and just started my drone hobby, which has turned into a complete obsession and I love it. I also happen to own an HVAC business, coincidentally! Most RTU(Rooftop units), package units are installed in commercial and business applications. Really depends on the building or the home's layout to use them or a conventional split system. Still install new ones today just rarely in residential applications. If i had to decide I would definitely have a package unit at my home. The ductwork is the key or if your house is raised off the ground. 21 years is about the extent of their operational lifespan on all residential systems.
Feel free to ask any HVAC related technical questions, maintenance or general information. I'll be happy to answer them.

@Ryanover - Thanks for joining us @ MP!
Good to have some insights to the HVAC industry. Our house is on a slab and the ducting is in the attic. We asked about putting the new unit on a pad. They said it would be a lot of extra work to do that. It's working very well so we're good.
