I recently purchased a MAvic Air 2 fly more combo after being an Autel X-star premium flier for many years. I avoided dji initially as fears of geofencing and monitoring my data and flight plans was off-putting. As years have passed and I have wisened, I understand the "why" and need for things like geofencing and with as much of my "privacy" that gets bought and sold by people like Apple, Microsoft and every retail merchant I shop with, I no longer recoil at the notion of others knowing where I flew. Anyhow, I have been amazed at all I had been missing. All the intelligent flight modes, control options, extensive software etc. I feel so spoiled now and am really having a ball.

Concur that geofencing is probably a necessity, and likewise data-harvesting goes on everywhere, even the local supermarket, which then offers you 'customised' offers based on what you've bought! Sometimes I find this disquieting, sometimes the cookies (or whatever!) look too good 👍. Welcome & enjoy your MA2 (have one too, does exactly/all I need).

I have a similar experience coming back to DJI from Yuneec. My previous Typhoon H did a lot of the stuff modern drones do, but you really had to work hard to get decent results, and working with it always seemed like an uphill struggle. Like you I am finding DJI makes it all so much easier, more intuitive and just more helpful !

But I also don't forget the reason I abandoned DJI in the first place - I was fed up of losing craft to the occasional IMU / compass craziness their legacy FC's have done, that would sporadically ruin my otherwise perfect flights. I am hoping that has changed in the 6 years I have been away !

Geofencing and data harvesting are not the same. Although, some in the government realm have accused DJI of obtaining data, that has not been proven. With that said, let's keep this thread on topic.

DJI's geofencing system is called DJI FlySafe GEO, and it's built into every DJI drone. The system uses apps like DJI GO 4 or DJI Fly to trigger warnings or restrictions when a drone enters or exits a geofence. There are different types of geofences, including:
  • Restricted zones: Appear red on the DJI app and prevent flight.
  • Altitude zones: Appear gray on the map and may limit flight altitude or trigger warnings.
  • Yellow warning zones: May not appear on the map, but trigger warning messages.
Some geofences are advisory only, and indicate where it's safe to fly, or where flight might be a concern. For example, geofences might be implemented around airports, power plants, prisons, or other locations.

To unlock a DJI drone, you can use DJI FlySafe to determine if you need to unlock it. You can then proceed with unlocking if necessary, using either a "self unlock" for blue zones, or a "custom unlock" for red zones.
