My wife is currently in China and I am wondering if she purchased a drone for me there whether I would have any problem operating it back here in the USA, anyone know?

A DJI drone purchased anywhere can be used anywhere.
But you would have problems with any warranty coverage that might be needed.

I was thinking that a drone purchased in China would not have the same Remote ID module that a model exported to the US would have. Would this cause and issue?

It's probably the same model as sold all over the world with the RID activated in countries where required just as the FCC/CE feature is.
I doubt you'll find any advantage purchasing there.

In my experience, identical consumer goods available in the States and China tend to cost more in China.

If it does not have RID or it does not work correctly, you'll just need to attach an external RID module.

Your wife will need to carry extra cash with her to pay the various importation fees that DJI normally pays for you when you order from them. If you don't mind paying those fees Bring the Drone home.
Edit: read the post below tho!

I cannot directly answer the OP's question, but I can give an experience I had buying a controller from China from Ali Express.

I purchased a controller for a Phantom 4 RTK from Ali Express. The controller would not work in the United States and asked for a Chinese phone number for activation. This has happened to others, and others have been able to resolve it through various means.

I could not and contacted DJI. Since the Phantom 4 RTK uses a niche software (DJI RTK/Agriculture) it could not be solved unless I sent the controller to DJI Service and they applied a firmware that only they could apply.

I sent the controller back for a refund.

I am only sharing an experience and cannot say if this would happen to the OP, but to keep it in mind.
