The enigmatic and very photogenic ruins of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe is todays featured video from our recent Highlands trip...
Located within Wick Airport FRZ (Flight Restricted Zone), this is a place I have long wanted to visit and to capture with our drones.
I had to apply online to Wick ATC for a flight clearance at least 24 hours before we wanted to fly. We chose Wednesday because the weather was looking good, and thankfully, it was approved. On the day of the flight, we had to ring Wick ATC to confirm clearance and let them know we were starting our flights, and then once we had completed it, we had to ring and let them know again.
Wick ATC was great to deal with, and the ruined castle - currently shored up with scaffolding after the extreme storms last year - was all I had hoped; however, the birds on site made it impossible to fly any closer than I did.
The day was warm, 21C, but there was a Sea Haar on the other side of the peninsula - which can be seen on the horizon behind the lighthouse - and it was windy, 20-30mph winds, which is why the AVATA footage is a little wonky, it was working hard to fly straightly...
Definitely worth taking the time to apply for permission and to fly!
