Controller charging my phone

Has anyone noticed that once an Android phone is connected to the controller, the controller starts charging the phone? I was thinking about changing the way they are connected because it really depletes the controller battery in short order. Could I use a power bank to power the controller and connect my phone to the standard USB on the bottom? Would Go 4 operate properly?
Just wondering...

I have 5 batteries. I use an iPad Mini 3. With full charges on the iPad and the controller, I get through all 5 batteries. By this time, I'm ready for a break. I haven't really experienced any fast discharging of the controller.
