You can't turn off the screen on the RC1a or RC1b controller. However, if you connect your phone to the USB A port, you can connect an external battery pack to the USB micro charge port on the controller. It won't charge as fast as the controller drains power, but it slows down the net battery drain significantly.

Valid suggestion. I used this method for boosting controller use duration with the RC-1A and the RC-1B. Good workaround. I posted a detailed response concerning this with photographs.
