I searched and found one old thread but I am not really sure.
So ultimately does descending sport mode use less battery? I would imagine so since it is fighting the gravity less.

Unless you are descending from a very high altitude, any actual difference isn't going to be measurable.
If you are flying the Air 2S, it won't make any difference as it has the same descent speed in Sport or Normal mode.
Max Descent Speed
6 m/s (S Mode)
6 m/s (N Mode)

I am actually descending from high altitude and it's a Mini so the descend speed is higher.

The Mini and Mini 2 have different descent speeds for Sport and Normal modes.
Mavic Mini
Max Descent Speed
3 m/s (S Mode)
1.8 m/s (P Mode)

Mini 2
Max Descent Speed
3.5 m/s (S Mode)
3 m/s (N Mode)

Any actual battery saving would be too small to measure.
The real saving would be due to flying for a shorter flying time when descending at the faster rate.

For example, if you descended from 1000 metres with a Mavic Mini, that would require 9.1 minutes in Normal Mode vs 5.5 mins in Sport Mode.

Over more normal distance the difference wouldn't be enough to worry about.
e.g. from 100 metres it would be 33 seconds vs 55 seconds flight time.

Totally makes sense, saving battery from the less flight time.

What about ascending? Seems to be the same answer to me.

The arithmetic will be different because although the flight time is less, there's a significant difference in how hard the motors would be working in that flight time.

I did a distance test with my Mavic pro and got the same distance in both modes, just a sport mode was faster.
