First flight location options?

I am hopeful that there will be a DJI package (don’t know which) under the tree in 12 days….. Been reading/watching everything I can find about getting ready for first flight. I have been flying a toy drone just to get a feel for flying, but I hope the DJI products will be easier to control (toys HATE wind).

Question is about where to fly. I have a 2 acre empty lot next to the house but there is a large cell tower on the corner of it and the rest is basically surrounded by houses (all with wifi) Once you get past the houses, there is a very dense hardwood forest (almost lost a toy drone in it)…. I also have a golf course that runs through the subdivision (fairways…) but it is also surrounded with houses and forest.

I just don’t know if I will be able to leave the house (family day) to drive out to find some farmland to fly on. That is going to be the most open and out of the way that I know of but it is still all surrounded with forest.

Is flying next to house a bad idea, considering the description above? I am not planning on taking it far out but I would hate to end up searching the forest for it too…..

The 2 acre lot next door sounds perfect for first flights. It may depend on which Mavic is in the package but I wouldn't worry about the cell tower or WiFi interference. After all, you are going to keep it close, right?

way too afraid to take it far. probably stay within the lot boundaries and max of 200' high.

Height scares me because the toy drones would always find wind and take off. It was a race to get it back down before it went out of range. Hopeful it will be a M2Z so range should not be a problem. The M2Z was 1st on the list but also listed the Air just to see if I could hit an acceptable price point for Mrs Claus…..

Keep it close get fam. with controls, I'm jealous you got best of the best from what I've read handles better in the wind than my mp1 have fun keep everybody away so you can focus.

Just make sure your total return to home flight sould be around 30m above the highest point around you

Fly around the field …

Get accurate and try some precision flying - around Buckets etc...

You would be surprized Just how good your reception can be...

That way you will be a Better Pilot...

Which drone are you hoping Satan brings you? All of them are very good in the wind but anything above the Spark and unless the winds are 20mph+ you’ll be fine - they hold rock steady in the air.

I’ve had my M2P in winds of nearly 40mph and she behaved impeccably (note I wouldn’t recommend you go for a first flight in such conditions!).

Different techniques work for different people, but I would recommend the opposite. Once settings (RTH, GPS, etc.) are verified in Go 4, get airborne and do not look at the screen; just concentrate on the Mavic and how your stick inputs affect the flight. You need to be proficient flying without the display so you will be prepared for when, not if, you have a Go 4 or display device failure.

That way you will be a Better Pilot...

He still has yet to even opened the "present" yet. Yet alone read the manual (twice).

He still should be in a wide open field for the first number of battery cycles, just to get used to the controls, the GO4 interface, and getting used to bringing back the AC when/if the GO4 crashes on his device, and never ever beyond LOS. At this point.......

My suggestion: print 3 copies of the manual,

1: for the living room, next to your comfy reclining chair...

E: on your nightstand beside your bed for sleepy bye time reading...
and

32: The bathroom....'er, the Porcelain Library....

To be honest … I don't think I have EVER read the Entire Manual - (or even 20% of it …
- Most of DJI operation - is quite intuitive - … and YOUTUBE videos - invaluable -

trust me I have been reading/watching everything I could get my hands on for a good 6 months. some of the stuff I "know" but you just cant really lock it in until you have the drone/controller in your hands. Have a feeling the search button is going to be used a lot before the 1st flight, just to make sure I am doing it right.

first flight with the toy drone went right to the house next door...… no clue what I was doing. However, I did get a decent amount of practice in with it before the motor gears wore out. was actually getting comfortable flying (no video feed) but any wind was deadly to it....

sadly, I have my hopes WAY up, if Santa does not come through, it is going to be depressing. will just have to watch all the new owners start posting here.....
