Flying A Drone Legally in NYC?

Living in the area, I find it almost impossible to believe there's a spot where you're out of the radius for both LaGuardia and JFK...and that the harbor patrol had no trouble with these guys filming the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. That seems unbelievable!

I wonder if they needed special permissions from the city to do this. Like they must have had special permission from B&H, who won't let you film in their store normally - or even carry bags with equipment without special permission.

All told, I'm guessing a lot more behind the scenes than what is shared.

Considering that Casey is a well known YouTuber, photographer and videographer, and has been investigated by the FAA once already for flying in NYC - he probably found a legal way to shoot that footage. B&H most likely love him, as he buys tons of camera gear there and, through his video reviews of camera gear, probably generates some business for them as well. Just a guess - but I bet the video is completely legit.

I'm sure it's legit...never doubted that. Just wondering what hoops he hopped through and trying to confirm that the average Joe, like me, isn't going to get the opportunity to get that kind of footage, simply by renting a charter boat around Manhattan!

Many if not all of the NYC restriction are probably due to Casey Neistat LOL!!!. I'm told that there are a few places where you could fly drones within the 5 boroughs (Staten Island and Brooklyn are two that I recall). I'm visiting the area in July and will be in the city for at least 2 days, I'm going to bring my drone and will try to fly. Any input from current residents will be appreciated (I grew up there but moved away 40 years ago)

You can't even bring the drone on broad the ferry to Statue of Liberty not saying flying around there. LOL! I went there last week lucky me for not carrying my MA or Spark with me. But I did brought my Osmo mobile.

I like how he says. We are just out here flying as friends, this is not for a commercial purpose, then posts it on youtube to generate income with the footage lol.
