Gimbal/camera sideways while taking video?

Does anybody fly the drone forward while taking video with the gimbal/camera looking to the side? I haven't found a use for it yet. I have always flown with the camera and aircraft in the same direction and maneuvered aircraft to point the camera to where I wanted it.

I turned mine to the side and saw the leg and prop and it appeared not to have any stabilization. It is good to see what the wind is doing to you I guess but I haven't found a use. I had trouble getting it back in the center while trying to fly.

Since you can fly just as easy sideways as forward I don’t see a need. Unless you want to take advantage of forward obstacle sensors, but there is that darn pesky leg in the way.

That's how I saw it also. Then I don't have to try and recenter it either. I just wondered if there would be a shot flying along something like a bridge or railroad tracks with the camera pointed down and over and flying along side it if it would give a different effect. I guess I'll experiment one of these days.

I've been wanting to take video of a steam train in the future using this technique, flying forward while panning to the left, but not so far as to capture the front leg in the resulting video. I have a site which allows me safe parallel flying without obstacles for a ways. This would result in some great video with the steam clouds billowing. Have to wait until the steam engine is restored and in use this coming summer.

To re-center the gimbal, use one of the programmable buttons to jump vertical down, horizontal up.

It would be nice if we could get a thumbnail view from one of the OA sensors when our gimbal is not facing direction of travel.

I saw a video in this Forum, once, where the drone filmed a small forest to the left while flying forward. Never tried it myself.

If you use the Goggles with the Mavic 2 you can film sideways, as you have head-tracking with the gimbal. If you look to the side the gimbal moves as well, in realtime. A very nice feature.

I occasionally fly straight my MA2 with the gimbal turned a bit to the side and slightly down while recording video, Usually when I want to capture a long pan of a cliff face or other linear feature. I find it easier than flying at an angle with the gimbal "straight" when I'm close to the feature because I don't have to worry about hitting something if I fly a bit poorly, Here's what I do:

1. Disable sideways flight (this helps me keep on course with the gimbal to the side).

2. Fly to the position of where I want to start the pan. Adjust my distance from the feature then straighten the drone on the course that will keep it close to the feature, but pass it "safely". Pick a landmark out there that will let me check the course.

3. Keep the drone hovering straight and move the gimbal sideways and down to get the view I want, pick out the landmark in the corner of the view. Start recording and use the pitch stick to move the drone along the course - watching that landmark in the corner to make sure all is well. Because sideways flight is disabled I don't have to worry about the exact position of the pitch stick.

I suspect someone more skilled a piloting their drone than me would be able to accomplish the same effect flying sideways, but when I try that I have trouble keeping close, but not too close, to the feature I'm recording.

Are you able to post or link that referenced post and or video?... I’d like to see if possible. TIA
Sorry, I saw it months ago and did not actually take much note of it at the time.

This use to be called coarse lock, keeping the drone going forward, you can turn the drone, hence camera, and the drone would continue in a straight line away from you.

On the M2P it has been replaced with Tap Fly Free, this enables the drone to be sent in a straight line at a preset speed, whilst the drone is flying you can rotate the drone, hence camera, and the drone will continue in a straight line.

Beware when you rotate the drone, not to hit something on the route of the drone as the camera and front sensors would be looking to what you are filming. Hope this makes sense.

DuckHunter is talking about being able to move the gimbal itself sideways, not flying the AC sideways.

If you press and hold the center of the screen and slide your finger left or right, the gimbal turns left/right.
Not all models have this, only up/down.

But I do like tapfly.
