Gimbal Question

My gimbal in beginner mode only faces forward or down, when moving the toggle on the remote. Is that normal?

Yes (regardless of mode)

To look left or right you have to YAW left or right (left stick)

Go into settings, you can change the gimbal to point up as well.
By default this is turned off.
After each update pays to go back into settings and recheck them as they tend to reset.

Just to add a bit, the toggle ( I assume you are talking about the small stick on the right of RC) on RC does only look forward or down but I use the left wheel under the left stick side to move the gimbal fully up and down.
