So today was the day I had my first crash, have had my mavic for a week or so and taken it out a few times for some quick flights and touch wood, no crashes till today.

So earlier today I thought I'd take my mavic out in my backyard for a quick flight.

Did the usual checks ie calibrated compass, calibrated the gimbal etc etc

So started the mavic up, only to see the rear left side propeller fly off  I quickly tried to cancel the take off but the mavic had already gone up a foot or 2, started spinning out of control and hit my back wall then fell on the grass.

After turning everything off, the props are fine, camera and gimbal are fine but a bit of cosmetic damage on the rear legs where it hit the wall.

So lucky I guess phewww.

Note to myself always check to see if props are properly on lol. God knows how they got loose, just recently got the dji mavic sleeve to keep my mavic in. Perhaps the rear prop came loose within the sleeve or maybe I just didn't twist the prop in properly. As the other day I gave them a clean after landing in some tall grass.

Lesson learned.

Ahh good call thunder. I'll check them when I get a chance.

Also after the crash obviously I again did my gimbal calibration which passed fine and gimbal looks fine.

I took it out after making sure the props were properly secured and the mavic looked good going up and flying about for a few mins. So no major problems there.

But as it was a windy day, not too windy but enough of it. I noticed the mavic when hovering was slightly moving off to the side, I imagine that the wind was having an effect on the hover capability and also when trying to fly in a straight line it was again going off to the side a bit.

But I'll check the rear tabs to make sure they aren't damaged.

Rear tabs are fine :).

Although one of the rear landing pads, the plastic bit at the bottom had disappeared but went out back and saw it lying there lol. So snapped it back in.

Just as a matter of interest was that your first time calibrating?

I have read a couple of times of people calibrating before what appeared to be just another local flight.

I calibrated mine on day 1 and not done it since, including flying 150 miles from home when away for the weekend.

How often should it be done if there have been no problems/crashes etc?

Do you calibrate compass every time you fly? Question to yas786.

No not the first time calibrating, I tend to calibrate the gimbal everytime I take it out.

I know some people will say there isn't any need to but I'd rather be safe than sorry I guess.

Yes I tend to, just making sure everything is ok. Although a few times I haven't, I've just put my drone on the ground and it automatically pops up with 10-15 satellites.

But sometimes I've noticed the app doesn't connect to any satellites so I just do a quick calibration dance.

I might recommend that before you ever do a compass calibration, you first look in the app realtime compass interference monitor, and make sure its very low, otherwise move the Mavic to a new spot. You can find that screen a few levels into the settings.

Different opinions on calibration. If the sensors are reading normal, fly. I am of the opinion that if it says calibrate, that's when it should be done. Likewise on traveling hundreds of miles without any change on compass readings.
