Heusden is renowned as a seventeenth-century fortified town.
In many aspects, Heusden still resembles the city as depicted by the Amsterdam mapmaker Joan Blaeu on his famous map from 1649.
But the town is much older: if you look closely, you will see within the early modern ramparts the complete and almost unchanged street pattern of medieval Heusden.
That town arose around 1200 in the shadow of the castle that the lord of Heusden had erected at a strategic location, just north of the old dammed river Meuse and just south of the new strongly meandering river Meuse.
With its picturesque streets, ancient buildings, many premises and galleries, special shops, well-equipped harbors and top restaurants, the fortified town of Heusden is a great destination for lovers of art, culture, history, water sports and good food and drink.
After a thorough restoration, the Burgundian city received the 'Europa Nostra', the highest European award in this field.

Did it suffer any bombing damage during WWII? Your video does a great job showing off the beauty of the town. Thanks for sharing.

It was complety destroyed by the Spaniards in 1569.
At the end of World war II the Germans used had there frontline there and when they retreated they blew op the church towers, townhall and the highest points of the vestes and doing that they killed 134 men, women and children. They did that because they were afraid the allies would use it as a watchpoint to attack the Germans while retreating.

Thank you for your reply and video. As I looked at the video I could not help but notice the similarities to the architecture I have seen in Holland, which really is not too much of a surprise. Is Belgium considered a part if the Netherlands?
