Perched high above the Victorian Spa town of Strathpeffer, hidden in a quiet and beautiful Highland Glen, is the enigmatic Knockfarrel Vitrified Hillfort.
A sunny - if extremely windy - June day gave us a chance to visit this interesting historic site, and to take in the amazing views from the summit. Surrounded by the blooms of wild flowers - heather, Rosebay Willowherb and beneath the scented blossoms of the Hawthorn - the Queen of the May!
A short but steep ascent from the small hidden car park brings you to the flattened top platform, edged by earthworks of stone that have been vitrified - fused together through heat.
No one knows why several Scottish Hillforts have been vitrified; it doesn't make the stonework any stronger, and it would have taken an immense amount of effort to gather the wood needed to heat the rock to the melting point, yet here we are, they exist...
