How long to "get the shot"

I realize each time is different but given my plan is travel photography I'm curious to see peoples impressions of how much time it takes to "get it". I just viewed that Iceland compilation and it looks like quite a bit of footage was shot to get that completion.

I don't travel alone, my wife (and sometimes kids) are with me and maybe a tour group. I already take time to get the land based shots and if I add time for aerials, how pissed will people be?

I do plan the major shots ahead of time via google and try and time the settings how I visualize what I want to get. But if it takes 30 min of time to get 30 seconds of footage I can see some unhappy times for me ahead.

My expectation is that a minute or two to setup, most shots wouldn't require a lot of distance to arrive, shoot the photo and video that I had planned in my head, repeat as many times as needed, and return to home and move on. It's that middle part I don't know how long to plan for.

I hear you on your thoughts about others "not into it" could get tired of waiting. Perhaps the fact you are already "aware", is you best defense of keeping everyone "happy"!

I'm very very new at this but to give you some idea my wife and I did two short flights at two locations about a 10 to 15 minute drive from home. We were only gone from home just over an hour. (I thought that was real quick)

Set up is all on you and how you pack, we were in our truck so just needed to toss out the landing pad, pop in the battery to the Mavic, pull the gimbal covers, power up, wait for GPS lock and check the APP screens that everything was "ready", check for a clear flight path and go. Did an "orbit" of an old "barn" buzzed a few fields, land, check the Mavic over for issues, move to the next site and repeat.

Practice and it will take you no time even if you pack the Mavic away each time. (Really the way the Mavic can travel in a back pack the the main reason I bought it. I'm in "training" this summer to take it on the snowmobile this winter!! Riding with others will "test" the whole reason for for your post!!!)

Good luck!

The first real time I went out flying, I dropped wife and kid off at football practice 10am on a Saturday morning

Drove 45 minutes to the area I planned the night before to shoot

Flew 3 batteries and took around 60 stills

Got back to pick them up from Football practice at 1pm - They have food after practice so was just in time for a quick pint of Guiness, hehe

I should Clarify. I don't mean the learning curve. I mean after I'm proficient and comfortable. I'll practice a lot at home. I'm talking after that. Ie fly to Iceland for a trip. Go to the various waterfalls at the right time of day. Do people get that shot in 1 take? 10? My dear wife is fairly patient about my hobbies but on a travel trip with many things to see in a day we can't kill and hour shooting when we used to spend 15 minutes on land based photos.

Well, if you are a competent photographer, and if it is stills you are doing, I should see no reason why it should take any longer to get the shot. Explore different angles / proximities quicker in the air than if you were on foot for sure. Get to places you could never normally do. If you are in a rush, I would fly a battery and take as many shots as possible then when back home review and choose at your leisure. Best to shoot in AEB 3 or 5 shots so you get to choose the best exposure when you have more time

Thanks, I am mostly a still photographer but with the advent of half way decent in camera video I'm shooting more and more video. I suspect I'll be doing a bunch still frames and likely video secondarily. In fact I'm researching exposure settings etc for both now. Appears they aren't the same, IE a frame grab in dlog requires a bunch of work to "get right" vs a jpg & raw photo with the jpg going up on the daily travel blog and the raw being left alone till I get home. I'm already at about 20# of camera gear and daypack so the mavic stuff will have to be pretty minimal to stay under size and airline carry on rules. Not to mention my poor back!!!
