I have a Mavic 3 Pro and recently purchased a claw for drone deliveries. The tether attaches to the body with tie wraps but I want to add a small hook just forward of the underside lights to attach the tether instead of the tie warps. Does anyone see a problem with this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello from the Crossroads of America tas99.

Nice to meet you Tom. 🤝

I would use a plastic, brass, or aluminum hook that is light weight and non magnetic, which shouldn't mess with the compass.

I don't have an M3P for reference but thought I'd share the thought.

Welcome to the Forum.

Thanks Crossroads, that makes sense. I'll find something non-magnetic.

If those parts don’t move around during flight, do a compass calibration with them attached prior to takeoff, and that should calibrate and fix any compass issues. There are other metallic parts on your drop unit, including the servo motor and other metalic hardware that’s built into it.

What will you be doing with this 4 feet of string? Delivering stuff to your neighbor or buddy?
No problem there........You need a part 107 and an air carriers certificate (Part 135) to do it legally.
What are the length limits for string disposal in your area? flying with string attached is the same as disposing of it and certain lengths are forbidden. check with your Fish and Wildlife Dept. in Cali 4 ft is too much string!

I use a small fishing line connector for my claw & fishing line drop. Been using them for years taking lines out to where the fish are. Good way to make a few bucks! (Results would speak for themselves, lol) There should be some utube vids of it if you need a visual aid... Good luck and have fun!

I decided to print a small plastic hook to attach the string and that seems to be working ok. No issues with compass or navigation. I appreciate everyone's help.

Not sure what CAFGUY's issue is with string but there is no string disposal. It stays with the drone through the entire flight.

It is counted as disposal when you use it. long lengths of string left in the wild is a detriment to wildlife, and there are rules that you need to be aware of. In the state of California for instance those little droppers are not legal because of the string. I am also just letting you know that the FAA requires you to have a permit to drop things from RC aircraft. I am just informing you of the fact that it could cause problems and to protect yourself. You need to check the rules in your area...that,s all Im sayin. Fly smart

Another concern is if it’s dangling and starts swinging and has enough weight, the drone will be trying to stabilize itself which will actually case even worse swinging. Drones that use a
Line to drop or lower a payload have to have their flight parameters programmed to prevent doing that. My brother did this with a sign he dangled below his drone and had a very hard time controlling it.

What is the rule from the FAA requiring a permit to drop something?

The only thing I ever saw on dropping items in Part 107 is that it must not create undue hazards to people and property on the ground. Part 91 has similar language.

OP, as far as legality on delivery, you can deliver items with your drone all day, every day. It just has to be line of sight, not fly over people or moving vehicles (Unless you obtain a waiver and the Mavic 3 Pro cannot be made into a OOP Category drone) and you take precautions when delivering the payload to people and property. Good luck and please share your results.

You will not obtain a waiver for the line of sight for delivery though, as that route is part 135.
