For myself, I got a Parot ARDrone 6+ years ago and while novel, it's still a toy. Busted motors and such has left it 'hangered' in its box mostly. I'm getting a generous tax return (gotta adjust withholding) so decided it's time to look into drones. From the folks I know of that has them, DJI keeps coming up as the 'only way to go'.
I almost went for the $500 P3 on Amazon, then almost went for the P4Advanced, but figured I should see what the other models are. I travel by motorcycle up to the north shore of Lake Superior frequently in the Summer, and really want the best videos and stills I can get up there. Looking seriously at sizes of cases, it didn't take long to choose to 'downgrade' to the Mavic, for it's superior transportability.
Why so many problems? It hasn't been out long, there are likely production bugs being worked out (sounds like it's selling extremely well), and firmware updates with bug fixes are frequent. Nice to see they're adding features as well. Like me, there's likely a high percentage of new to drone operators diving head first into a very advanced and capable device. I expect to have 'problems' while climbing the learning curve, and from what I've gathered reading here, many issues reported are just that. Operatior issues. Yes, I'm getting the DJI insurance, ASAP, whatever they call it. For all the reasons above, it's silly not to for me.
I haven't even gotten mine yet so I'm reading these posts in my spare time, and then some. I'm not worried that I may have made the wrong decision. If I find I really want the P4Advanced, I'll save up and get it. My bigger concern is how to decide what to get in a year or two when the Mavic II is released, or whatever comes next. I'm most comforted that the Mavic is so advanced it makes it harder for me to mess up (P-mode), and has some hot performance capability that I may never test the limits of. It can serve me well as I grow, and if I find reason for better later, I won't regret this choice (likely).
I have no idea how many units DJI has shipped, but I'm willing to bet that the relatively few problem reported here are but a minor fraction of units sold. Most are out having fun and won't bother with forums. Well, I'd like to think so. It's a big step, but I'm certain I've made the right choice for me.
