Irakli Beaches: A Threatened Paradise

Irakli's beaches stretch for 3 uninterrupted kilometers of fine sand, backed by forests on one side and the vast expanse of the Black Sea on the other. Located north of Nessebar, Irakli is a symbol of a disappearing wild coastline. Irakli's beaches are situated within a biodiversity protected area. Featured in an ARTE documentary in April 2007, they drew public attention for two reasons: their beauty and preserved state on the one hand, and the looming threat of construction on the other. On a highly coveted coastline like the Black Sea, such a vast expanse of beaches is a veritable goldmine that arouses many appetites.

What is Irakli?

It is a protected area located on the southern coast of the Black Sea, near the village of Emona (Cape Emine). Irakli falls under the jurisdiction of the city of Nessebar. More specifically, Irakli is located north of Nessebar, 9 km south of the town of Obzor and 20 km from the town of Byala. Approximately 55 km separates Irakli from Bourgas and 70 km from Varna. The resort of the Sunny Beach is 10 km south of Irakli.

One of the last virgin beaches on the Black Sea

Located between the two major Black Sea resorts - Golden Sands (Varna) and Sunny Beach (Bourgas), Irakli's beaches have remained untouched by professional tourism. They are mainly frequented by young people, who prefer natural beauty to the comfort of hotels. People camp as they please in Irakli, and that's a good thing! Irakli is one of the places where young people gather every July 1st to celebrate July Morning. This nocturnal festival bears the name of the eponymous song by the group Uriah Heep and symbolizes the hippie and libertarian spirit. In the early morning of July 1st, everyone watches the sunrise, accompanied by music. Imagine these long, long beaches of fine sand whose only scenery is the forest on one side and the expanse of the Black Sea on the other. The total length of Irakli's beaches is 3 km.

Irakli harbors a great biodiversity

The long absence of human intervention has contributed to the preservation of a rich and rare biodiversity. Thus, one can find plants characteristic of the coastal flora such as the sea lily (Pancratium maritimum), also called the queen of flowers. Irakli is also inhabited by many species of birds. Related to the eastern part of the Balkans, the Irakli area combines landscapes of great beauty. Thus, along the mouth of a small river, a submerged forest has formed. There are also dune formations in Irakli, called white dunes.

Irakli - A threatened paradise

Could this highly symbolic place, Irakli, a place where nature is threatened by man, be sacrificed on the altar of private enterprise? In August 2007, the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment, in the person of Minister Evdet Tchakarov, lifted the moratorium that had been in place on the Irakli area for several years, authorizing the construction of hotel complexes in the immediate vicinity of the beaches.

Repeatedly halted by legal actions and other administrative appeals, the project gradually progressed until 2017. Irakli's beaches were included in, then removed from, the list of protected areas that should be integrated into the Natura 2000 network by the same government.
