Is a TWIC card worth it?

Worth the $125 just to have it?
I would say it depends completely on where you want to work doing what kind of job. For example, the TWIC is a required credential for various jobs at international air and maritime ports of entry. Its going to give you a wider range of potential jobs inside a secure facility including unloading, inspecting or transporting cargo. $125 is not that much if it opens the door to a job that you want to do.

Thanks. It can also be acquired upon being offered a job.

Check out this drone pilots list of credentials. A TWIC is included. Excerpt below:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Our pilot has a Transportation Worker Identification Credential, also known as TWIC®. This credential is required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act for workers who need access to secure areas of the nation’s maritime facilities and vessels. TSA conducts a security threat assessment (background check) to determine a person’s eligibility and issues the credential.

Even with a TWIC card, you will need a legitimate reason to be in a secure facility, usually your employer will provide the paperwork and ID card, no paperwork, no ID, no admission. You can't just flash your card and gain admission. Most ports ban drones for safety and security anyway. Most airports have little knowledge of what the card is, so no, it would be of limited use to acquire one.

**Former TWIC holder here, if you're going to operate a Drone in Secured areas that require this credential, just keep in mind that one "may" also have to receive Site Specific Training and Credentials for areas like Refineries. If one is hired to operate a drone within the confines of a refinery or port ( good luck with that ), not having a TWIC is not the end, one can ask to be escorted by someone who has a TWIC, but that takes some prior planning.
The TWIC is just another form of a government ID, but an excellent one which requires a background check by the issuers usually gov contractors, mine was issued by Martin Marietta back then.

Yes, its worth it.

** I work for a petroleum inspection company, I no longer go into Refineries today, Thank God for that, the odors o_O

I'm a physical security consultant and I used to have one when I was involved in Southern California port projects. There are some areas where you are required to have a TWIC card. It's gonna depend on what projects you're involved in. Unless you already a job that requires a TWIC card I wouldn't recommend it. If you think it's gonna get you the job within a port area I kinda doubt it.

I was required to get one as a commercial captain to enter controlled ports. After 911 the TWIC requirements went nuts, couldn't even go under the Skyway Bridge without one. Nowdays unless your working in a gov restricted area it's not needed or worth it.
