Magic mini return home

I take off.. wait for home base to establish but later when I press the return home button my mini just wants to land instead of returning. What am I doing wrong ?

If you are within 20 meters (66ft) of your takeoff point the Mini will land and not return. Go further than 20m and test again.

( if all else fails .. read instructions ) After buying my mini I didn’t explore all the things you area able to do which is what I am starting to do now.

Most probably what's suggested in previous post above ... and this is pretty basic & thing's like this should be in the back of your mind before you start to fly.

I'm not sure if you're aware but it's way more information regarding your drone on DJI's web page for the Mini ... much more extensive than the quick start guide you get in the box.

@platty apart from the land only if closer than a set distance ,there is also the facility to choose what you want the drone to do when a RTH is initiated you can choose from land ,hover, or RTH you need to set this before you fly

This is incorrect.
The only thing you can configure for RTH is the RTH height.
When you initiate RTH ... RTH is what happens.
You have confused RTH with what happens when the control signal is lost
