I did some googling and searching and don't seem to see anyone discussing this for either Air2 or Air2s (I have an Air2).

Just wondering if anyone has tried or heard if we will be able to bind the regular M3 controller to our Air2 or Air2s to save carrying both drones.

Reviews I have read or watched on YouTube indicate that the part number is exactly the same as the Air2S controller.

They are the same. except the DJI Mini 2 and Air 2 are OccuSync 2.0
The Air 2S and Mavic 3 are OccuSync 3.0

I can test this weekend if I can bind my Air 2 and Mini 2 with the Mavic 3 Controller and vise versa.
While it is true that there is still nothing published in field tests, there are forums where it has been reported that the controls of the Air2s cannot be linked with the Mavic3, they are different transmission systems ... DJI's business is that you buy the M3 with the options that were thought and developed for your new drone. The CS V1, so to name it, is not compatible with the M3 either, if it were, it would not be a business to have developed a new CS Pro for the M3, which "forces" you if you want to have the Mavic3 with those features ... buy in new control ... good for those who can do it, but I think that the M3 is still raw and the strangest thing is that they have launched it on the market when it is not yet fully developed ... so those who have it will already have to take the respective care and not trust everything DJI claims to say about the performance of the M3 ...

Instead of having discussions here, just read the updated specs on the M3 Controller at dji.com

Remote Controller Transmission System

When used with different aircraft hardware configurations, DJI RC-N1 Remote Controllers will automatically select the corresponding firmware version for updating and support the following transmission technologies enabled by the hardware performance of the linked aircraft models:
a. DJI Mini 2/ DJI Mavic Air 2: O2
b. DJI Air 2S: O3
c. DJI Mavic 3: O3+

Your welcome

Not the case with the RC Pro vs the original Smart Controller of course.

Revisiting an old thread...
With the FW update 1/24/22 and the RCPro being able to bind to a Air2S.

Going the other way...
Is there a physical difference in the RC-N1 for the Air 2S and the Mavic 3?
I have the M3Cine & RC Pro, but interested in the using at times a larger tablet or iOS Flight App not able with the RC Pro device.

In looking at various DJI shops... I can't tell if there's any difference, despite the O3+ - O2.
If the same, then I don't really need to buy a RC-N1 if I'm understanding correctly.

All RC-N1 are exactly the same even the same part number.
All the difference is the firmware. The RC-N1 when paired to the M3,Air 2S, Air2 or Mini2 change the firmware automatically in the DJI Fly app when you switch aircraft.

Interesting… the Remote compatibility is even indicated in the DJI M3 specifications:
