A few days ago, when I tried to fly my Mavic Air 2, I suddenly got the error message: “Gimbal Unable To Connect (code 40012) - Service Required.” About a year ago, I crashed this drone into some tree branches, and it was also dropped on the floor while inside a hard case, but it’s worked fine ever since — until now, it seems the damage may have finally caught up with me.

I removed the gimbal, checked it over, and reseated the cables, but that didn’t help. Calibration won’t run either — tapping the button does nothing. I read that some people had luck replacing the ribbon cable (mostly for the Mini), so I tried replacing mine too, but that didn’t fix it either.

I eventually ended up tearing it apart to inspect the IMU as well. I don’t see anything obviously wrong with it, but I’m assuming this part isn’t really fixable. Is it worth taking a closer look, tapping it a few times, or should I just plan to order a replacement?

You have a bit of damage to take care of there. You may need to replace the gimbal. Are you SURE the cables are seated properly? Was there silicone holding the connectors? if so you have to replace it and let it dry before you re-assemble the Drone.
The error indicates that the Drone cannot communicate with the gimbal...... After a crash that usually means the gimbal stabilizer is toast!
Gimbals for your Drone run in the $250 Range and you will also need to get it serialized (add 110).
Because it has been in a crash there is no guarantee this will work. DJI Drones (some of them) suffer from really bad "solder flake" during crashes. You may be replacing a board in the near future too.

I verified that the cables were indeed seated but I can't be 100% certain. Thanks for information. I also wasn't aware of the cost for a new Gimbal! Ouch! I had a good run with this drone so I think it's time to let it go. It's currently in pieces at my desk and putting it all together in order to get a repair quote makes no sense.
