mavic mini

can the mavic mini fly over 2.5 miles when on a waypoint mission

By default, the Mini doesn’t support waypoints. The only way to currently fly waypoint missions is with third-party software like Dronelink. Because of the way the waypoint feature in the Mini works, if the drone goes out of range (normally much less than 2.5 miles), it will do whatever is setup for loss of signal: hover, RTH or land. The mission will not continue. Also, bear in mind that, legally, you must keep your drone in sight and must be able to control it if necessary (so it must stay within range anyway).

Right. If a DJI quad natively has waypoint capability, then the AC firmware would perform the navigation. The app would only be to program, upload and initiate the autonomous flight.

But without native waypoint capability, then the app has to do the flying, sending low level flight instructions to the AC. If signal is lost, then the app can't send any navigational instructions real time.

The aspect of waypoint missions and keeping it VLOS has already been covered. The two questions remaining are, 1) Do you have enough battery power to cover the 5 mile round trip, assuming 2.5 miles out both ways? 2) Again, assuming 2.5 miles out, 13,200 feet, can you maintain connectivity with your Mini? If the mission is 2.5 miles, but closer in I would say it is possible and the two following answers do not apply.

Answer 1). The Mini has a top speed of 26mph, assuming that it is not flying into a strong wind. It is possible that the battery would hold for 5 miles as depending on the P or S mode you would be flying for roughly 12 or 17 minutes respectively. Flying into a headwind would cause the Mini to slow down from it's top speed and burn extra power to fight the wind. On a calm day the battery power should be sufficient for 5 miles of continuous flight.

Answer 2). I highly doubt you can get 13,000 feet of range out of this thing. Much depends on the amount of interference and obstacles. But the most I've ever seen a Mini fly (via YouTube) is under 10,000 feet with no obstruction to the signal.
