This now little know town has given birth to Hernan Cortes, famous conquistador responsible for the fall of the Aztec empire and colonisation of what is modern day Mexico. The name of this town has been given 5 cities including the second largest city of Colombia. The name Medellin comes from a Roman general Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius who established a military base where modern day Medellin is located. The town has some roman ruins including a well preserved amphitheatre, a impressive castle on the hill overlooking the town and the river. The church of San Martin in the town is considered on of the oldest medieval religious buildings in the province of Badajoz. Is't also where Cortes was baptized. To top it of you also have Asturias bridge with its 20 stone areches that was built in the 17th century and it continues to serve the town allowing car traffic thanks to the fact that it is 5 meters wide, Thats very wide for the standards wo the period when it was constructed.
