Ok, is it safe to fly in Air plane mode? Any disadvantages?

Any theoretical disadvantage I see that if there is a need to update firmware or flight database, or last check for weather, than I switch on the data (switch off the Airplane mode) and back to Airplane mode right before I start the flight. Biggest advantage of Airplane mode is I am free from any distractions and notifications from mobile device. Also I have read that switching off the mobile device transmission decreases risc of interferences with the remote control.
